![]() You start from scratch every time you start. The possibility of writing a bad book is continually present for everybody, all the time. I say to my students, it's not as if writing books makes me a good writer. You can only follow your own little path, which is necessarily narrow. ZS: Oh, I'm sure there are many people who hate it, but you can't really work thinking about that. MC: It's interesting that you feel like an outsider, especially because your work has been so widely accepted by the literary community. It's the people who feel that they belong very strongly who put the fear of God into me, to be honest. I don't think of that as a negative feeling. Moving between America and England is like a concrete manifestation of a feeling I've had all my life, of not really belonging anywhere. There are lots of people who feel very certain about themselves, where they're born, what it means. But I think of that as a definition of a writer: somebody not at home, not comfortable in themselves in their supposed lives, in their nation, in their bodies, in everything. ![]() ZS: I think of myself as somebody not at home, I suppose. ![]() ![]() MC: How does living in America and England change your perspective when you're writing about either place? ![]()

![]() So the Grey Land gets to expand in creativity a little more, beyond the brief glimpses we see during the call.Īlso, Melanie! I honestly never expected her story to continue, but I'm glad it did. The Sídhe are in control of the land, but there are so many animals great and small that fill the land, all of them hideously twisted. We get to see more creatures in the Grey Land. More things I liked! There's more excellent creativity on display here. Second best would be Alanna Breen, who might not biologically be a mother, but damn if she isn't mom of the year. I actually wish we would have gotten more Aoife chapters. You never expect the secondary character who did next to nothing in book 1 to shine so hard in book 2! Which was totally understandable given the circumstances, but boring. I mean she literally laid in bed for a good portion of the book. She was Emma's rather despondent girlfriend. ![]() ![]() Obvs.Īoife! I didn't think about her much in the first book. ![]() Mild spoilers throughout, but anything heavy duty will be marked. The Call is a fantastic book - brutal, inventive, and exciting! I expected more of the same with the sequel The Invasion, as well as plenty of new surprises. “I hear the Sídhe have found a way in.I hear that’s what it’s about. ![]() ![]() ![]() Roma knows it’s his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he’s determined to set things right-even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure. ![]() Roma is still reeling from Marshall’s death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him. I would recommend this to any child or adult who loves to color and loves craft making. But, I still love the ornament concept, even if I wish they were slightly bigger. I am, however, a bit concerned about coloring in the smaller ornament versions, as one would need a very fine pointed medium with which to color in the details. I love all of the designs, but my favorites are the Tree-of-life, Mangrove Roots, and the Edelweiss Fairy snowflakes. ![]() At the end of the book, the designs are re-featured as ornament-sized drawings, so one might color, laminate, and hang in a window or on a tree. It kind of felt like I was playing an episode of a TV show I’d seen before in the background while doing chores. The sound effects and background noises were cool, and the voice acting was well done. It was fun and entertaining, but not the kind of story I’ve come to expect from Lauren. They are the sons of hard-working, successful families who come out from New York City year after year to relax and reconnect. The crucial difference is that Benji Cooper, the narrator of the story, is black, as are all of his friends and the seasonal residents in his stretch of Sag Harbor (“black boys with beach houses”). “Sag Harbor,” Colson Whitehead’s winning, witty fourth novel, takes on a subject that is familiar and unfamiliar at the same time - the summer migration of city residents to a beach community, where the teenage children take jobs at the ice cream shop and get into the kind of trouble that not-so-bad boys do, playing with BB guns, avoiding the barbecues of their parents, coaxing elders into buying them beer, and trying to sneak into a club when their favorite band comes to town. ![]() ![]() ![]() One thing I found extremely interesting was the frequent references to the works of Sir Walter Scott. ![]() The battlefield scenes are quite horrific. But this is far from being a romanticized depiction of the war. There was something so beautiful and noble about them both. My family lived for 4 years in the Valley, so all the mountains and towns were quite familiar and made me a little homesick! I loved Richard Cleave and Judith Cary as I love few other book characters (and I love many!). It follows the experiences of several men from the Shenandoah Valley, as well as the truly heroic parts played by the women and children. It certainly gave me a lot of respect for him, nevertheless!
